Description

To paraphrase the poet, Marvin Bell, this book is not exactly an academic book, but it is not inexactly an academic book either.

Published in 1999, Zen and the Practice of Teaching English represents what I believe is the first attempt by an educator to combine the practice of teaching English with fundamental principles of Zen.

The purpose of the book is to help both beginning and experienced teachers achieve a new perspective on their professional lives, a perspective they are not likely to get in university classrooms and school in-services. It is also a personal book based on personal knowledge, that invites readers to consider the possibility that the foundations of teaching practice are the very foundations of life, and that life inside and outside the classroom is more like one life than two.
